Organizational Overview:  One in 7 adults in the United States already has diabetes and that number is growing, nationally and globally; it is expected that 1 in 3 adults in the US will be diagnosed with diabetes by 2050 and that 642 million adults worldwide will have diabetes by 2040. Because there is no single solution to the diabetes epidemic, The diaTribe Foundation utilizes multiple strategies to change the dialogue about diabetes, including improving the lives of people affected by diabetes and prediabetes through education, advocating for action, and convening multiple stakeholders to exchange ideas and work together to address this crisis. A growing national nonprofit organization, we are creating a political and cultural shift in which reducing the burdens of diabetes, or eliminating the disease entirely, becomes a priority for diverse stakeholders including industry, healthcare providers, government, nonprofits, and patients.

Founded in 2013 by renowned diabetes advocate Kelly Close as an extension of her work in the field, our Foundation reaches over a million and a half people every year with the diaTribe.org publication, through which we are educating and supporting patients and the people who care about them to live happier, healthier, and more hopeful lives. In addition, we are influential advocates, bringing the patient voice to the Food and Drug Administration and policy makers nationally. As the organization continues to grow and identify new opportunities for impact, we are seeking a Managing Director to play a critical role in leading the organization.  As a partner to founder Kelly Close and the Board and staff, the Managing Director will provide internal leadership and management for the organization in order to leverage Kelly’s role as a national spokesperson for diabetes action and lead fundraiser for the organization.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work in partnership with a passionate and dedicated entrepreneur to grow a small but high-powered organization into the leading organization in a critical public health arena.
 
Position Overview:
The Managing Director will have overall responsibility for the success of the organization, building on a strong organizational foundation and utilizing an amazingly talented team to meet ambitious goals.  Reporting to Founder Kelly Close, the Managing Director will oversee all financial, operational, and programmatic aspects of the organization and will collaborate with the Founder and Board on strategy, fundraising, and governance.  As a fast-growing patient-oriented organization, we are looking for a Managing Director who can hit the ground running, implement efficient and effective systems to optimize and leverage the team’s time, and set priorities within a dynamic and quickly evolving environment.
 
 
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • With the Founder and Board, set vision and strategy for the organization to maximize the mission to improve the lives of people with diabetes, prediabetes, and obesity
  • Leveraging the Founder, Board, and staff, ensure creation and successful completion of annual work plans in support of organizational strategy; recommend and execute timelines and resources needed to achieve goals
  • Lead all operational, financial, and staff management areas of the organization
  • Partner with the Founder to ensure that her time is maximized in strategic planning, public relations, and fundraising
  • Create and manage an annual budget to meet goals
  • Provide strategic and operational support to the development function to ensure adequate revenue to cover expenses and invest in the growth of the organization
  • Ensure programmatic and organizational excellence with rigorous evaluation to measure progress against goals
  • Ensure effective staff management and development
  • Deepen and refine all communications with the goal of creating a stronger brand and organization
  • Serve as a strong and collaborative keystone for an evolving organization faced with significant opportunity, limited resources, and dynamic personalities
 
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Passion for The diaTribe Foundation’s work in diabetes, prediabetes, and obesity is required; previous experience in public health/health care is preferred
  • Proven leadership and nonprofit management experience with a track record of effectively leading and scaling an organization
  • Demonstrated success building and leading high-performing teams, setting and achieving ambitious goals, and managing organizational resources to support growth; experience coaching and mentoring earlier career staff required 
  • Experience managing development strategy and operations
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills combined with exceptional project management skills; systems- and process-orientation required
  • Outstanding organizational skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to multi-task effectively in a fast-paced environment; able to demonstrate flexibility while infusing process and systems into the organization
  • Ability to give and receive feedback constructively, across all levels of the organization
  • Self-directed, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and able to work with diverse groups of people
  • Calm, patient, and professional demeanor, able to provide direction and support in a dynamic environment
  • Advanced degree preferred, ideally an MBA, MPH, MPA, or similar
  • Exceptional references, clean background check, and ability to work legally in the United States
