Position Overview:
The Director of Major Gifts is responsible for advancing philanthropic support from individuals to build a robust base of major gift ($10,000+) support for NCLD. S/he is an integral member of the development team and works closely with the Senior Director, Strategic Growth and NCLD leadership to develop and execute the organization’s short- and long-term fundraising strategies for high-level individual giving. This position is based in New York City.
 
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage portfolio of high-net worth major gift donors and prospects.
  • Create fundraising goals for each potential donor in his or her caseload based on the donor’s history of giving and the organization’s knowledge of that donor’s potential.
  • Develop a plan for each donor that will include communications and engagement strategies. Consistently execute on these plans in a timely fashion in order to attract, retain, and upgrade donors.
  • Collaborate with NCLD leadership, board members, and prospect researcher to strategically identify new prospective donors. Create donor profiles as needed.
  • Maintain strong relationships with existing major donors, ensuring frequent touch points.
  • Serve as a support to New Visions’ board of directors, by facilitating their engagement in NCLD events and being responsive to their requests.
  • Spearhead efforts to identify and cultivate new potential board members.
  • Offer strategic guidance to NCLD leadership and board members, such as preparing them for donor meetings.
  • Participate in the creation and execution of small, exclusive cultivation events to deepen relationships with current major donors and engage new prospective donors.
  • Oversee Special Events consultant to ensure successful Annual Benefit and other events, as needed.
  • Work closely with development team members to develop compelling messaging, track progress toward revenue goals, and implement data-driven fundraising strategies.
  • Update workflow and donor communications in the team’s donor database.
  • Ensure accurate information is captured in major donor profiles and their contributions are consistently and thoughtfully recognized.
  • Collaborate with leadership and program teams to determine areas in need of fundraising support; stay informed on NCLD’s programming in order to facilitate meaningful outreach to donors.
  • Perform other duties as required.
 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Minimum five years of experience as major gifts officer.
  • Demonstrated success in strategically identifying, cultivating and soliciting new prospects for major gifts ($10,000+).
  • Experience in supporting and promoting the engagement of nonprofit board members.
  • Ability to understand the needs and interests of the organization, and make meaningful connections between NCLD leadership and prospective donors.
  • Enthusiasm and facility for relationship building and interpersonal interactions.
  • Excellent listening, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to speak compellingly about our mission.
  • Ability to stay organized and demonstrate persistence, in order to consistently follow through on long-term strategy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and productively with diverse groups of people to achieve common goals.
  • Familiarity with donor databases.
  • Strong work ethic and high standards for personal and professional excellence.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality and discretion.
  • Sense of humor; positive attitude.
  • Passion and commitment to NCLD’s mission.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, work weekends, and travel nationally (10%), as needed.
