Position Summary 
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will design, lead, and implement a sustainable development strategy to increase ANY’s philanthropic revenue from a diverse portfolio of sources. The CDO will achieve this goal by enhancing existing fundraising strategies and developing new, innovative approaches to create a strong support base for ANY. The CDO is also responsible for the ongoing development, refinement and scaling of ANY’s national communications plan and will guide the strategy for all communications, website, public relations messages and collateral. 

Reporting directly to the CEO, the CDO will serve as a member of Senior Staff, contributing to overall organizational strategy, and will foster a culture of philanthropy across the ANY team. The CDO will manage our national Development and Communications team and partner with local Executive Directors on development and communications strategies, ensuring that the local teams are equipped with the tools, resources, and insights to meet their goals. 

Position Outcomes
A successful Chief Development Officer will achieve the following outcomes of employment:
  • Grow ANY’s revenue in line with our strategic growth plan, from $3.5M in 2017 to $5M+ in 2021 
  • Ensure a comprehensive and cohesive strategy for all development and communications activities at the national and local levels
  • Empower the ANY Development and Communications Team and foster an organization-wide culture of philanthropy
Key Responsibilities
In order to achieve the preceding outcomes, this hire will hold the following responsibilities:

Fundraising
  • Develop, manage and deliver a clearly defined fundraising strategy, including short- and long-term measurable goals that are aligned with the growth goals outlined in ANY’s Strategic Plan 
  • Manage and grow a diversified portfolio of major individual and institutional funders 
  • Lead the creation of annual revenue pipeline, working closely with local EDs and Development staff to create a cohesive and integrated plan 
  • Oversee the development, testing and implementation of new fundraising or fee-for service initiatives 
  • Design and oversee development systems and structures that provide both support and accountability, as well as ensure appropriate balance between standardization and flexibility across all fundraising activities 
  • Guide the vision, planning and execution of fundraising events, including the annual Benefit Dinner 
  • Establish and support giving societies and volunteer fundraising structures
  • Collaborate with Board Committees on development and communications activities and provide reports and support to the Governing Board as needed
Communications
  • Manage ANY’s overall brand awareness and marketing strategies, engaging diverse staff teams and all local sites 
  • Supervise compelling cross-platform communications (e-communications, direct email marketing messages, peer to peer website and other public-facing content, including the annual report) 
  • Cultivate and manage media contacts 
Leadership
  • Partner with the CEO and other key staff members to best leverage fundraising activities, with a special focus on major donor cultivation and solicitation
  • Motivate, coach and manage the Development and Communications team, employing a coaching mentality to support team members’ goal attainment and ongoing professional development
  • Serve as a member of Senior Staff, participating in setting organizational priorities
  • Cultivate a culture of philanthropy across the ANY team
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of professional experience, including success in nonprofit development roles and experience in supervising staff 
  • Proven track record of creating and executing effective fundraising strategies for diverse revenue streams, with success in soliciting and closing 5- and 6-figure gifts from individuals, foundations, and corporations
  • Growth-oriented strategist, with the ability to drive innovation, change, and growth, and detail-oriented implementer who can mobilize small teams to translate strategy into results 
  • Superb relationship management, interpersonal, and communication (written and oral) skills, including the ability to inspire and hold accountable diverse internal and external stakeholders (including funders, peers, direct manager and reports, board members, and volunteers) 
  • Experience cultivating and leading a high-performing team while meeting ambitious goals 
  • Comfortable balancing multiple priorities and deliverables 
  • Ability to thrive in a high-energy, fast-paced, and entrepreneurial organization as part of a collaborative and committed team 
  • Strong understanding of technology and information systems pertinent to the role (Salesforce, Causeview expertise a plus) 
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Ability to participate in periodic evening and weekend events
