Organization Overview
The Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV) is a unique residential community and high school in Rwanda which is currently home to 500 vulnerable youth, many of whom were orphaned in the aftermath of the 1994 Genocide. Based on an Israeli model that originally served orphans from the Holocaust, and now fully adapted to a Rwandan context, ASYV’s mission is to enable orphaned and vulnerable youth to realize their maximum potential by providing them with a safe and secure living environment, health care, education and necessary life skills. Education and community service are used to model and create socially responsible citizens in Rwanda and around the world. Our graduates have gone on to be scholars, entrepreneurs, volunteers and leaders in their community.  As our ASYV family grows each year, we are continually delighted by the success of our kids. ASYV is a place where hope, love, core values and self-expression are as important as professional training and a solid education.

Position Summary 
As senior-most ASYV staff member in the U.S., the Managing Director will collaborate with the Rwanda-based Executive Director and the Board of Directors to build and implement strategies that will allow ASYV to sustain and grow its impact. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Director will hold primary responsibility for fund development in support of ASYV’s $2.4M budget and will create a comprehensive fundraising plan, build relationships with donors, and oversee development operations. Additionally, the Managing Director will participate in setting organizational strategy and oversee activities and staff across the marketing/communications, administration, and finance functions based within the U.S. office.

Key Responsibilities
Development and Marketing/Communications
  • Create and implement ASYV’s development plan in alignment with the organization’s overall strategic goals
  • Serve as ASYV’s key external representative in the U.S., sharing the ASYV mission with current and prospective individual, foundation, and corporate supporters through a range of engagement and stewardship activities
  • Ensure effective operations, infrastructure, and staffing for all aspects of donor identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship, as well as database management and gift processing
  • Oversee fundraising events and donor communications
  • Enhance ASYV’s brand identity and align all communications with this brand
  • Lead efforts to broaden ASYV’s visibility and reach both within the U.S. and Rwanda

Organizational Leadership 
  • Participate in setting ASYV’s strategic plan, ensuring the infrastructure ASYV needs to achieve its long- and short-term goals and objectives, and monitoring its progress and performance
  • Supervise and coach ASYV’s New York-based staff 
  • Partner with the Board Chair and Executive Director to develop, motivate, and manage the Board of Directors; support board recruitment, retention, and performance
  • Serve as staff liaison to the Board of Directors and Board committees 
  • Work with finance staff or contractors, as well as Rwanda-based staff, to develop and manage ASYV’s budget and financial reports
  • Manage administrative aspects of the ASYV Fellows volunteer program, including participant recruitment, screening, selection, and support
  • At least 7 years of experience in development, with demonstrated success in individual major gifts work and experience soliciting gifts at the five-figure level
  • Prior success in management/supervisory roles, with a demonstrated interest in playing a multifaceted organizational leadership role
  • Well-rounded nonprofit management skillset, with familiarity in budgeting/financial management, communications/marketing, staff leadership, and strategy development and implementation
  • Demonstrated ability to lead strategically and contribute tactically toward ASYV’s goals, with strong organization, time management, and prioritization skills, as well as the ability to foster teamwork and transparency
  • Outgoing, engaging interpersonal style, with strong communication and relationship-building skills 
  • Past success in partnering with a Board of Directors or similar governance/advisory entity
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment and partner effectively with colleagues and stakeholders across different geographies, time zones, and cultures 
  • Familiarity with Jewish philanthropy preferred
  • Exposure to international work in developing countries, ideally in Africa, preferred
  • Passion for ASYV’s mission and our kids and the ability to convey our stories in a compelling way
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
