Position Summary
With a growing team of over 25 professionals, Invest Detroit is seeking a more recognized role in the revitalization ecosystem, and to increase its engagement of community funding partners. The Vice President of External Relations will create and implement an outward facing marketing strategy to support the development work of the Invest Detroit team by growing public and philanthropic support as well as increasing public awareness of the organization, its programs and impact. The Vice President will build and manage Invest Detroit’s brand identity, and will lead all aspects of marketing and communications activities. In addition, the Vice President will work with senior leadership to set the organization's strategic fundraising agenda to achieve and exceed its revenue goals through the identification and cultivation of funding opportunities. The Vice President will work collaboratively across Invest Detroit to secure financial resources through grants and appeals. Finally, the Vice President will play a key role in identifying and managing strategic relationships, partnerships and community engagement activities to build awareness and further the organization’s development and programmatic goals. Reporting to Invest Detroit’s President & CEO, the Vice President of External Relations will join a collaborative and dynamic leadership team.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute a strategic, integrated marketing plan focused on supporting the development work of Invest Detroit, building awareness in target communities, and strengthening the organization’s reputation with clients, funders and other stakeholders
  • Recommend and implement a branding strategy to support increased brand recognition and positive community relations
  • Create and manage all marketing communications including press releases, social media, newsletters, the Invest Detroit website, the organization’s annual report, and other ancillary materials
  • Support the creation of a strategic fundraising agenda and take a leadership role in collaborating with Invest Detroit staff to develop and submit proposals for grants and other funding opportunities
  • Investigate, identify, create and cultivate new partnerships and strategic alliances that will extend the Invest Detroit brand, increase avenues of support, and build community awareness and engagement
  • Manage and promote annual events 
  • Develop and monitor an annual marketing budget with conservative and realistic projections for revenues and expenses
  • Work closely with staff to review program services in order to obtain information for reporting, comply with donor expectations and be aware of programmatic needs for funding to fill gaps or unmet needs of clients
  • In partnership with the President & CEO, engage in presentations and speaking opportunities to cultivate support from civic organizations and corporate, foundation and business representatives 

  • 8+ years of professional experience in nonprofit marketing and communications, with a focus on branding and experience with a broad range of platforms including social media
  • Experience working in a nonprofit environment, with specific exposure to and understanding of foundations
  • Experience working with nonprofits that provide financial services and support to underserved communities is preferred
  • Track record of success in developing and implementing comprehensive strategies for marketing and development 
  • Exposure to nonprofit development, including individual giving, corporate giving, community partnerships and grant-writing
  • Demonstrated ability to take direction and drive results independently as well as collaboratively
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including strengths in public speaking and professional presentations 
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize effective interpersonal skills to build and maintain external relationships and strategic partnerships as well as collaborate internally and externally to achieve goals
  • Highly collaborative, dynamic, and passionate about the mission of Invest Detroit
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent required; Master’s degree in marketing or related field preferred
